William L. Hackworth, age 90 of Alcoa went to be with the Lord Tuesday, September 18, 2007. He was born on December 16, 1916 in Anderson County, TN. He was preceded in death by his late wife, Charlotte Handley Hackworth; daughters, Judy Wilson and Carolyn Whitehead; parents, William L. Hackworth and Caldora Walters Hackworth and nine brothers and sisters. Bill was a member of First Baptist Church of Alcoa and retired from ALCOA.. As a young man he played baseball, coached basketball, and enjoyed fishing, hunting and water skiing. He proudly served in the US Army during World War II, receiving many medals of honor including a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Bill was a mason, member of the Eastern Star and active in community and church service as long as his health permitted. He had a good sense of humor, enjoyed listening to gospel music and was an avid Atlanta Brave's baseball fan. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Survivors include: Daughter, Mary Rutherford of Marietta, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Chris Sawyer of Maryville, TN; grandchildren, Robert Walker, Greg Walker and wife Amy, Wayman Whitehead and wife Lee Ann, Laura Sawyer and Daniel Sawyer; great-grandchildren, Blake Walker and wife Sarah, Katelyn Walker, Nicholas Walker and Emma Walker; many nieces and nephews and special long time friend, Leonard Ware. The family would especially like to thank Dr. John Ingram, the staff of Girling Home Health, Blount Memorial Hospital and Colonial Hills Healthcare Center for their exceptional medical care and compassion. Also, a special thank you to the Alcoa Fire Department for their assistance and kindness. Funeral service will be at 11:00 AM, Saturday, September 22, 2007, Smith Trinity Chapel.
