Walter Raleigh Smith

December 13, 1930 — November 14, 2011

Walter R. Smith, CWO-2, USN Retired, age 80 of Knoxville, TN went to be with the Lord on Monday, November 14, 2011. He was a member of Middlebrook Pike United Methodist Church, Knoxville, TN. He retired from the US Navy after 22 years of service to his country. He was a Korean and Vietnam War Veteran. After retiring from the US Navy he worked for and retired from the US Postal Service. He was also a 32nd degree Mason and Past Master of the East San Diego Lodge. Preceded in death by: Wife, Barbara J. Smith; Mother, Elizabeth Bledsoe Smith; Father, Raymon Smith; Step-mother, Annie Smith; Brother, James Smith; Sister, Annette Strickland. Survivors include: Wife, Elizabeth A. Smith; Son, Steven R. Smith (Peggy); Grandson, Nathan R. Smith; two children and four grandsons he loved and cared for as his own, Johnnie Frost (Libby), Quinn & Stone Frost, Jacqueline Dozier (Matt), Jackson & Ryder Dozier; Sister, Rosemary Harris (Homer); Brother-in-law, Don Baird (Katherine); Sister-in-law, Betty Baird; Brother-in-law, Ned Strickland; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Special thanks to those who helped to care for him during his illness including nieces Anita and Shannon Smith, cancer support group leader Jeannie Green, all doctors and nurses and Covenant Hospice. Family and friends will assemble for graveside service and inurnment with full military honors at 3:00 PM, Saturday, November 19, 2011 at Grandview Cemetery with Rev. Josh Kilbourne officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Fish Ministry which provides food for the hungry: Middlebrook Pike United Methodist Church, Fish Ministry, in memory of Walter R.
