Walter G. Cole, Jr.

Walter G. Cole, Jr., age 72, of Maryville, formerly Mobile, AL, passed away Saturday, April12, 2013, at home surrounded by his family. "Cole," as he was affectionately known by his family and close friends, received his Bachelor Degree in Commerce and Business Administration from the University of Alabama followed by his Juris Doctor degree from Alabama's Farrah School of Law. He was legislative Editor of the Alabama Law Review and was a member of the Bench and Bar Legal Honor Society. He was also a member of Alabama's Iota Chapter of Sigma Chi. After graduation, he served his country as Captain in the United States Army as a judge advocate general in both France and Germany. Upon his return, he practiced private law, was assistant district attorney for the city of Mobile, and with Merrill Lynch, New York. He was hired by Morrison Cafeteria, Inc., later to become Ruby Tuesday, as attorney for their legal department where he developed the "in house" real estate division which became his specialty. He served as Vice-President of Legal/Real Estate for 31 years before retirement. "Cole," was also a devoted Rotarian serving in many offices and activities. He lived his life by the "4-Way Test," and was known as the "Southern Gentleman." He received the "Rotarian of the Year" award for his dedication and service, and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was an avid Alabama Alum and an excellent golfer. He was an unassuming Christian who quietly practiced his faith in kind deeds and gentle words. He was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church where he enjoyed attending the early service to hear the word of our Lord. He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Susan, and his five children; Bonnie (Michael) Guy, Kathryn (Dee) Willingham, Elizabeth (Richard) Roberts, Laura Cole, all of Mobile, AL, and Gregory Hixson of Walnut Creek, CA. He was the adored "Mamps" to his grandchildren, Katelyn, Sarah, Amanda, Amber, Claire, Allen, and Madeline. The family would like to thank Dr. Tom Kubota, and the nurses who provided him with their compassionate care during his courageous battle with cancer; Lindsey, Lisa, DJ, Kathleen, Ashley, and his special side-kick, Brittney. We would also like to thank Blount Memorial Home Health and Hospice services for their kind assistance. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice. Family will receive friends from 5:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 with a memorial service to follow in the Trinity Chapel of Smith Funeral & Cremation Service, Maryville, 983-1000.
