Victor Shannon

Victor Eugene (Tim) Shannon, age 87, died Sunday, October 19, 2008 at Morningview Transitional Care Center in Maryville, TN. He was born in 1921 in Kirksville, MO, the son of Dr. Frank W. Shannon and Eva Mae Kaiser Shannon, both of whom are deceased. He had one sister and two brothers, all deceased. He graduated in 1940 from Webster Groves, MO, High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served aboard a destroyer escort which made several trips across the Atlantic during the War. After the war, he moved to the Detroit area where he worked for the Ford Motor Co. While employed by Ford, Mr. Shannon took a number of college-level courses. He retired in 1980 from Ford's Sandusky, OH plant where he had worked for 18 years as Process Engineer for all Fort Motor Co. door latch assemblies. Tim and his first wife, Jeanne, moved to Franklin, NC, after retirement. After Jeanne's death in 1990, he met and married his present wife, Maxine Scouten Swanger of Cullowhee, NC, in 1992. They resided in Franklin until 2000 when they moved to Sylva, NC. In 2005, they moved to Shannondale of Maryville Retirement Community. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Maryville. Mr. Shannon leaves his wife, Maxine; three children, Timothy of Russellville, TN, Tom of Bellevue, OH, and Terry of Livonia, MI; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving him are three step-children, Myra and Kathleen Swanger of Maryville, TN, Dr. Stephen Swanger of Louisville, TN, and Nancy Connor of Granite Falls, NC; eight step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren. Graveside funeral services and burial will be held Thursday, October 23, 2008 at 2:00 PM at Riverside Cemetery in Clinton, MI. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, November 1, 2008, in the chapel of Shannondale Retirement Community, Maryville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to your local Alzheimer's Association or your favorite charity. Family will receive friends Tuesday, October 21, 2008 from 5:00 until 6:00 PM at Smith Funeral & Cremation Service, Maryville, 865-983-1000.
