Vera Mae Hughes Stallings, age 85 of Maryville, passed away on Friday, January 29, 2010 at her home. She was born on February 24, 1924 in Snow Hill, North Carolina. She was raised on a tobacco farm in Eastern North Carolina and began nurse's training when she was 17 years old. She was a WW II army veteran. After the war, she earned a BS in Public Health Nursing at UNC Chapel Hill. Vera was a homemaker and enjoyed making her daughters' clothes when they were children, sewing ballroom dance dresses, creating beautiful hooked rugs and stained glass pieces. She enjoyed gardening and identifying wild flowers. She was an avid reader and enjoyed studying the Bible and Bible history. She was a member of Hill Crest Baptist Church. She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by husband Kerwin Stallings, parents John Evander and Lottie Simmons Hughes, five brothers and one sister. She is survived by daughter and son-in-law Stephanie and Eric Bank of Knoxville, son and daughter-in-law Langdon and Jennifer Stallings of Seattle, Washington and daughter, Neena Teaster of Maryville; grandchildren Benjamin, Caitlin, Mollie and Sandra Teaster and Zachary and Brittany Stallings; and sister, Lottie Gray Melton, age 92 of Virginia Beach. Vera was looking forward to her 86 birthday party; therefore, the family will receive friends for a celebration of her life on Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at Smith Life Event Center from 5 �" 7p.m. with a memorial to follow.
