Stephen York Coleman

Stephen York Coleman, born December 17, 1973 departed this life July 14, 2011. Member of Maryville Church of Christ. Baptized April 10, 1991. Stephens strong will and faith allowed him to journey through the illness of brain cancer for thirty three months. He fought his illness with perseverance, courage, determination and dignity. Stephen graduated from Maryville High School in 1992, where he was a four-year letterman in football and baseball. Stephen was the quarterback for the Red Rebels and was selected as captain and an all-state selection his senior year. Stephen was also a member of the 1989 AAA State Championship baseball team. In 1996, Stephen graduated from Maryville College with a degree in Business Management. He was a four year starter for the Scots baseball team as a second baseman and pitcher. During the 1995 season he and shortstop Chucky Yates ranked sixth nationally turning 43 double plays. Stephen attended graduate school at the University of Tennessee. In 1996, he became the fourth generation of Anderson Lumber and Home Center as Chief Executive Officer involved in sales and marketing. He also implemented and managed the installed sales segment of the business. Stephen used his passion for baseball as a coach on the Maryville High School baseball staff, influencing and mentoring young men for ten years. Following the 2011 season, Stephen was presented a plaque in recognition of his distinguished service, loyalty and devotion to the Maryville High School Baseball Program and the Stephen Coleman Courage Award was created to be given each year to a deserving Maryville player in remembrance of his perseverance and courage. Stephen was blessed with the priceless gift of friendship and is survived by a community of friends. Thanks to each one who touched his life in the smallest of ways. A special thanks to his girlfriend, Erika Weaver, who with steadfast love and devotion has walked with him throughout his journey with cancer. Stephen was preceded in death by twin brothers James William and John C. Coleman; paternal grandfather James H. Coleman, Jr.; maternal grandfather and grandmother Clifford W. and Hester M. York. He is survived by his parents Stephen L. and Brenda York Coleman of Friendsville, Tn; brother and sister-in-law Landon and Kristin Coleman and nephew Max James Coleman of Alcoa, Tn; paternal grandmother Lois C. Coleman of Maryville, Tn; Uncle James H. Coleman III and wife Candy of Gatlinburg, Tn; Aunt Amy Miranda and husband Ralph of Maryville, Tn; Aunt Billie Jean Stephen and husband Dennis of Columbia, Tn; and cousins Laura Smith and husband Zane (children Luke and Kate) of Columbia, Tn; Andy Stephen and wife Julie (children Drew and Anna Claire) of Murfreesboro, Tn; Adam Coleman and wife Meredith (son Liam) of Denver, NC; Elizabeth Coleman of Saba Netherlands Antilles; Joseph and Nathan Miranda of Maryville, Tn; Cheryl Ogle and husband Trey (children Parker and Carson) of Gray, Ga. Pall Bearers: Scott Hall, Keith Blanton, Jason Huskey, Kevin Hammond, John Cox, Jim Gaylor, Andy Stephen and Mark Potter. The family would like to thank Dr. David Reardon and Dr. Alan Friedman of The Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center, Duke University; Dr. William Reid and staff, University of Tennessee Medical Center; Dr. Susan Huntsinger, RN Ruth Borden and staff, University of Tennessee Medical Center; Oncology Treatment Center nurses, University of Tennessee Medical Center. Celebration of Stephens Life will be at 6:30 pm, Monday, July 18, 2011 at Maryville Church of Christ with Preacher Jonathan Jones and Minister Dan Chambers officiating. Interment will be at 11:00 am, Monday, July 18, 2011 at Grandview Cemetery.
