Shirley Lorraine Heinsohn, born December 6th 1928, passed away Friday 23rd in her home in Maryville. Dusty, as she was known to her family and friends, was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. Dusty was born in Montgomery Alabama to Carlton and Esther Moore. Dusty graduated from high school at the age of 16 while she lived in Gastonia, North Carolina. She continued her studies to become a concert pianist at Converse College. Two years later she enrolled as one of the early female undergraduates at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She graduated from this University with a degree in Journalism. Her first job was as a freelance journalist for the Charlotte Observer, for which she wrote a series of articles about the textile industry in North Carolina. She then moved to Washington D.C. where she was employed by the National Cathedral while being trained at the State Department to be a Foreign Correspondent. She met her husband Richard Heinsohn, otherwise known to family and friends as Dick. They were married for 54 years until Dick passed away on June 24th 2005. Dick and Dusty lived in Knoxville until 1955 when they moved to Stamford Connecticut. While in Stamford, Dusty was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, the Junior League, Stamford Garden Club and the DAR. Her favorite volunteer job was acting as a surgical assistant in the Stamford Hospital Emergency room. In later years upon retiring to East Tennessee, she continued her work with the DAR, enjoyed gardening, sewing, knitting and ceramics. One of her greatest joys was playing bridge with her Lunch Bunch, a loyal group of her best friends. Dusty now joins her loving husband Dick and youngest son Gray in heaven. She is survived by her Daughter Carlotta Heinsohn, son in law Scot Pounds, their children Margaret and Esther Pounds of Milton Massachusetts, her son Richard (Gil) Heinsohn Jr., daughter in law Penni Heinsohn and their children Nathaniel, Madison and Brooke Heinsohn of Maryville Tennessee. Family will be receiving guests Monday evening November 26, 2007 between 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm in the Trinity Chapel of Smith Funeral and Cremation Service in Maryville Tennessee. Dusty's Memorial Service will be at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Maryville on Tuesday morning November 27, 2007 at 10:00 am with the funeral immediately following at Grandview Cemetery in Maryville. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be sent to St. Andrew's Church or the Daughter's of the American Revolution.
