Richard L. Leatherwood, age 78, of Boca Grande, Florida and Walland, Tennessee died at his area home on Sunday. He was the son of the late Alvin and Frances Leatherwood, and brother to the late Walter Leatherwood. He was the son-in-law of the late John and Grace Anthony. He is survived by his wife Mary Ann, his daughter and son-in-law Katherine and Eric Brakman, and beloved granddaughters Stella and Nora Brakman, all of Richmond, Virginia. Another daughter, Suzanne, died in infancy. His family includes sisters and brothers-in-law Sue and Joe Dawson of Maryville, Ernie and Janie Wickham of Clarksville, TN and Mary Lane Leatherwood of Martinsville, Virginia. Richard had a very special interest in his nieces and nephews Caroline Dawson Smith of Nashville, David Dawson of Maryville, Johnny Wickham of Los Angeles, Tanner Wickham of New York, Scott Leatherwood of Asheville, and the late Dianna Leatherwood. His cousin Jackie Oldham Bumgarner lives in Maryville. Richard grew up in the Fairview community and graduated from Maryville High School, The University of Tennessee, Rutgers University, and earned a PhD from Georgia Institute of Technology. He was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. Early in his management career Richard worked for American Freight in Kansas City, Texas Gas Transmission in Owensboro, KY and Houston, TX. Much of his work career was spent with CSX Transportation in Richmond, VA and Baltimore, MD. He served on the Board of Directors of several organizations including Maryville College, CACI International, CSX Transportation, Maryland National Bank, The Baltimore Opera, The University of Tennessee College of Business Advisory Board, and Dominion Resources. For several years he chaired the boards of the B&O Railroad Museum and the Baltimore City Life Museums. Richard was an officer in the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Richard L. Leatherwood Scholarship Fund at Maryville College, 502 E. Lamar Alexander Parkway, Maryville, TN 37801. Funeral service will be at 4:00 PM, Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at Smith Trinity Chapel with Rev. Catherine Nance officiating. A private interment will be at Grandview Cemetery.
