Richard was born at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami Florida July 26th, 1943 the last of five children to Judith Harriet Bush-Hines and James Houston Hines. He lost both parents at a young age, but was fortunate to be fostered by a loving couple who were friends of the family. The Nobles raised him on Marathon Island in the Florida Keys where he developed a love of the ocean and worked as a fisherman. After high school, Richard served in the US Army. He continued his love of water by racing hydroplane boats as a young man. After moving to Tennessee, he worked as a Vocational Instructor at the Douglas Cooperative, a sheltered workshop for mentally handicapped adults. He taught job skills and directed work in the furniture refinishing department. He was an accomplished woodworker, selling various pieces at local craft fairs. Richard is survived by his wife, Marcelia Merla Stevens-Hines; his son and daughter in law, Paul and Katherine Rhodes; daughter and son in law, Cynthia and William Knighten; daughter and son in law, Vicky and Terry Whitehead; daughter and son in law, Marcelia and Jerry Howard; daughter and son in law, Stormy and Jeremy Phillips; son Richard Hines, Jr.; grandchildren, John & Justin Lewis, Connor May, Dale, Marian, Nicholas & Autumn Howard, Bailey & Cameron Whitehead, and Brandon Phillips; sister and brother in law, Fran and Bill Brooks; sisters, Ginger Hines and Judy Lynch; sister in law Delia Azzarello, niece Eleanor Seferovich; and nephews John & Joseph Strock. He was preceded in death by his biological parents, his adoptive parents and his brother, Hugh Douglas Hines. The family will receive friends from 6:00pm until 8:00 pm Friday, March 22, 2013 in the Life Event Center of Smith Funeral & Cremation Service, Maryville, TN 865-983-1000.
