Richard Henly Cooper, born April 19, 1943 in Knoxville, TN. died at home on August 4, 2017 from an extended illness. He graduated from the University of Tennessee. He started teaching at Fairview Elementary and became principal. He was the youngest principal in Blount County at that time and was principal at Fairview, Eagleton Elementary, and Hubbard Elementary where he retired after 34 years of county service. Following this he worked in Cades Cove with the Smokey Mountain Association. He loved to travel with his wife Jan, to be around children, and animals of all kind. He loved gardening and was an avid gardener at one time. He was a longtime member of Broadway United Methodist Church where he was a charter member of the Upper Parlor class. Preceded in death by his parents, Willard and Adah Cooper; and brother, Larry Cooper. He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Janelle Van Metre Cooper; step-son, Thomas Morris and daughter-in-law, Jennifer of Clinton, TN; grandchildren, Charlie and Estella Morris; brother, Hank Cooper and sister-in-law, Gayle Cooper; brother-in-law, Mickey Van Metre, and sister-in-law, Cheryl Van Metre; cousins, Bruce Morrison, Sharon Kyker, Howard Lamon, and Lester Lamon; A Celebration of Richard’s life will be held on Saturday, August 12, 2017 at 3:00 PM in the Smith Trinity Chapel with Rev. Dr. Mike Van Metre, Rev. Ron Matthews and Rev. Laura Rasor officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service starting at 2:00PM.
