Nina Gamble Murphy died at Asbury Place Health Center on September 29, 2007. She celebrated her 94th birthday with her family in May and had been in good health until recently. She was born on May 16, 1913 on Miller Street in Maryville and was proud that she lived almost all of her life within a block of Maryville College. She was a member of New Providence Presbyterian Church for almost 83 years. She was preceded in death by her mother, Scytha Cusick Gamble, and her father, Joe Houston Gamble, who were descendents of pioneer Blount County families. She was preceded in death by her brother, Ben Gamble. In 1942 she married John P. "Jack" Murphy of Knoxville, who died in 1996. She is survived by her three children: Patsy, and her husband, David, of Little Rock, AR; John, and his wife, Sherry, of Knoxville, and Mark, of Maryville. She is survived by two grandchildren, Scott King and Kathie King, and two great-grandchildren, Sophie and George King, all of Little Rock, AR. She is also survived by her nieces and nephew: Jane and George Weimer, and their sons, George and Jonathan Weimer, of Hoover, AL; Judy and Ted Pennoyer, of Knoxville; and Joe Gamble of Townsend. Nina was a graduate of Maryville High School and graduated from Maryville College in 1936 with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics. She earned a Master's degree in Education from Duke University. She taught mathematics at Everett and Maryville High Schools. When her children were all in school, she returned to teaching at Maryville High School. For many years she taught mathematics and then became the school's Guidance Director. She took a personal interest in and felt great pride in her students' accomplishments after they graduated. Nina instilled a love of the outdoors in her children. Among her great loves were feeding the birds and growing marigolds. A graveside service will be held at Grandview Cemetery, Maryville, October 2, 2007, at 9:00 am. The family will be available to visit at 10:00 a.m., prior to a memorial service at Asbury Place Assisted Living Center Chapel at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers donations in Nina's honor may be made to the Maryville Fund at Maryville College, the Employees Christmas Fund at Asbury Place Assisted Living Center, or the General Fund at New Providence Presbyterian Church.
