Myrtle Cook Curry, formerly of Memphis, Tennessee, was born on December 22, 1929 to Bess Huffman Cook and John Charles Cook. She graduated from Central High School where she was Editor of the Warrior. Myrtle received a Bachelor’s of Science in Education from the University of Memphis (then Memphis State University) where she served as President of Alpha XI Delta Sorority and on the Executive Council of the Wesley Foundation. She taught for several years at Cherokee Elementary until her marriage to Edward Inman Curry, Jr. on July 9, 1955. After years as a homemaker, Myrtle renewed her love of education by returning to the University of Memphis where she obtained a Master’s Degree in Special Education. She then commenced her lifelong passion of working with special needs children at Avon Lenox School and adults at various community and charitable organizations. Upon retirement, Myrtle remained active and continued to work with special needs children and adults and by serving on community and church boards, including the United Methodist Neighborhood Center and the United Methodist Women of Christ United Methodist Church until her relocation to Maryville, Tennessee to be with her daughter, Tene’ Curry Lewis. Myrtle was predeceased by her husband, Edward Inman Curry, Jr., her son-in-law, Perry Lewis, and is survived by her daughter, Tene’ Lewis of Maryville, Tennessee, a son, Edward Inman Curry III (Virginia) of Memphis, Tennessee, granddaughters Julia, Lily and Jessica and a great grandson, Coleman. The family wishes to thank friends and the entire staff at the Morningview Retirement Community in Maryville, Tennessee for their kind and loving care and companionship. A celebration of the life of Myrtle Cook Curry will take place on Thursday, March 22, 2018 at Memorial Park Funeral Home, 5668 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee 38119, with visitation from1:30 PM until 2:30 PM followed by a memorial service in the Fireside Chapel at Memorial Park at 2:30 PM.
