Mary Addie "Susie" Gladden

June 2, 1922 — August 16, 2013

Mary Addie "Susie" Gladden, age 91, passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus surrounded by her children on Friday, Aug. 16. She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren Gladden, her parents, Joe L. and Easter Williams, her brothers, Dave, Coy, and Pearlie Williams, and a sister Iva Lee Hollifield. She is survived by her son, Dwight, and daughter-in-law, Marilyn Gladden of Maryville, and her daughters Sharon Paxton and husband, Rev. Dave Paxton of Orange Park, Florida, and Sheila Vaught and husband Jim of Johnson City, Tennessee. She is also survived by three grandchildren: Rebecca Conn and husband Dr. Jason Conn of Dallas, TX, Stephanie Gladden of Knoxville, and Preston Vaught of Johnson City, TN, and two great grandchildren, Madison and Caden Conn of Dallas, TX. Susie was born on June 2, 1922 in Tapoca, NC. She graduated as salutatorian of Robbinsville High School in 1940. She went to work at ALCOA during World War II as an overhead crane operator, where she earned the nickname "Susie". Susie was a devout Christian and member of Springview Baptist Church. She taught 4 and 5 year olds in Sunday School and Mission Friends for many decades, both at Dotson Memorial and Springview Baptist Church. Susie was a devoted wife of Warren for 62 years before his passing, and she was a loving homemaker and mother to her children. She was an accomplished seamstress and loved to quilt by hand the many beautiful quilts she made. Services for Susie Gladden will be held at Smith Funeral & Cremation Service on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013 at 4:30. Receiving of friends will be held from 3:00-4:30 prior to the ceremony. Family and friends will assemble at 9:00 a.m. Monday, August 19, 2013 at Grandview Cemetery for the interment. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Springview Baptist Church's Samaritan Fund or to the Chilhowee Baptist Center through Springview Baptist Church, 4220 US Hwy 411S, Maryville, TN, 37801.
