Marjorie Juanita Swafford

August 29, 1923 — July 20, 2014

Marjorie Juanita Hayes Swafford, 1923-2014, is resting at peace with her Lord Jesus Christ. She is rejoicing with those who have been waiting, her beloved husband of 71 years, Carlos Lee Swafford, her precious daughter, Paula Diane Swafford, her beautiful mother, Cora Helen Walker Hayes who passed away when Marjorie was a child of 9, her devoted father, Jefferson Baird Hayes, her cherished aunt and uncles, Minnie Evelyn Walker Guthrie and Clarence Guthrie, Myrtle May Walker Womac and Fred Womac, with a special welcome from her cousins Vivian Guthrie Ocak, Bill Guthrie and Donnie Guthrie. As a young girl, Marjorie was extremely active and a high school basketball star. She loved bowling and square dancing and was a member of the Eastern Star. She and Carlos were also members of St. John United Methodist Church. In addition, in the early 1970's, they became foster parents and enjoyed helping to raise several rambunctious boys and girls. Always a lady and always in control, Marjorie was an intensely private person, but if you wanted to see her face light up, just put a baby in her lap. So we did, eight grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. She leaves behind a grieving yet joyful daughter, Judy Hutchinson and husband Howard Hutchinson, their children, Danny and Susan Hutchinson with son, Adam, Rodney and Belinda Hutchinson with son, Nathan; daughter Kristi Hood and husband John with daughters Ashleigh and Lindsey; a son Rick Swafford and his wife Jenny and their daughters and husbands, Emily and Will Yancey with daughters, Georgia, Amelia and Lena, Erin and Nathan Hill with sons, Greyson and Logan. Marjorie's youngest daughter and her husband are Kathy and Steve Marsh, their children and their spouses are daughter Stephanie Marsh and her daughter Haylee, son Micah and his wife Ashley Marsh with daughters, Madison, Avery and Laney, son Jared and his wife Tabitha Marsh with children Isaiah, Hannah and Lily. Marjorie was a lifelong caregiver herself, caring for her handicapped daughter, Diane, and even before Diane's birth, Marjorie took her ailing and blind father into her home. Therefore, both she and her family were especially appreciative of all those caregivers who came and went on a daily and sometimes hourly basis, assisting her so that she could remain at home. They include Lola Black, Tabitha Marsh and Gail Everett, Robin Roberts, and very special and close friends/caregivers, Susie McAlister, Peggy Sexton, Randal Caldwell and Sandy Castle. Dear Lord, take good care of our Mother and maybe she'll make you one of her famous apple pies! Funeral service will be at 7:00 PM, Thursday, July 24, 2014 at Smith Trinity Chapel with Pastor Bill Shelton and Rev. Billy Carrigan officiating. Entombment will be at 11:00 AM, Friday, July 25, 2014 at Grandview Mausoleum Chapel. Family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 PM, Thursday, July 24, 2014 at Smith Trinity Chapel.
