Luther B. Goodson, Jr.

Luther B. Goodson Jr., age 83 of Maryville, passed away Monday morning, July 31, 2023 at his home. Luther was a member of Middlesettlements United Methodist Church since the 1940’s. He was a graduate of Friendsville High School and retired from Alcoa Aluminum Company. Luther loved to fish, fly airplanes, ride motorcycles, tell a good story, and was a great country dancer. He loved people and never met a stranger and will be deeply missed by all his family and friends. Those that knew him, know that he is at peace with God. Preceded in death by parents, Luther and Edith Goodson; brother-in-law, Floyd Best; nephew, Scott Best. In these last 13 years with Janice, Luther “inherited” a large and loving family. He gained 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren that love him dearly. Survived by wife, Janice “Hightower” Goodson; daughter, Nadine Russell; Angela Brown; sons, Jim Cates, John Cates; grandchildren, Zachary Brown, Hollie Collins, Jacob Brown, Merritt Cates, Lea Cates, Ben Cates, Chance Cates, Blake Cates, Jack Cates, Jessica Cates; great-grandchildren, Maya Brown, Zola Brown, Samual Collins, Olive Collins, Abram Collins, Henry Brown; brother, Norman Goodson; sisters, Wilma Best, Faye Eblen; nieces, Kim Taylor, Laura Fowler, Tracy Gordon. Memorial donations can be made to Middlesettlements United Methodist Church in Luther’s name, 2729 Middlesettlements Rd, Maryville, TN 37801. Family will receive friends from 12:00 until 2:00 PM Thursday, August 3, 2023 at Middlesettlements United Methodist Church. The Funeral Service will be at 2:00 PM with Pastor Magan Stubblefield.
