Lula Belle Eggers Davis

Lula Belle Eggers Davis, age 81, of Maryville, died peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, August 28, 2010. Lula was known throughout the county for her fabulous teaching skills, her wonderful sense of humor, her zest for living, and her devotion to her greatest and only love, Robert J. (Bob) Davis. She served as Bob’s rock while he was principal of Everett High School, and when he went on to be the County Executive. They were happily married for 57 years. Lula leaves behind three adult children, Sharon Freeman, Becky Stegmann and Bob Davis Jr., their spouses Joe, Jeff and Linda, and grandchildren Lindsay Stegmann, Charley, Rebecca and John Freeman, and Ashton and Reece Davis. The family was blessed with our friend and Lula’s caregiver, Cassandra Leanne McBride. In addition, she is survived by her sister, Rusty Cross, and her sisters-in-law, Marie Eggers, Betty Eggers and Allie Davis; brother-in-law, Steve Carrier. Sharing in the family’s loss are her many nieces and nephews. She was preceded by her parents Myrtle and Ben Eggers and her brothers Lewis and Hobert Eggers. Lula was born in Blount County and at the age of 19, became a teacher at Porter High School. She graduated with a BA degree with a major in English and a minor in PE from East Tennessee State University. She met Bob at a teachers meeting soon after graduating college and her course was set. Lula was active in Maryville First Baptist Church, any of her children’s activities, and served as treasurer for Delta Kappa Gamma teachers’ sorority. She and Bob are former co-chairs of the Dogwood Arts Festival. Friends are asked to gather from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm, Sunday, August 29, 2010 at Trinity Chapel of Smith Funeral and Cremation Service, Maryville. Funeral Service will be at 11 a.m., Monday, August 30, 2010 at First Baptist Church Maryville, with Dr. Clarence Sexton and Dr. John Sharp officiating. Entombment will follow at Grandview Mausoleum.
