Lucy Mamonas Shoemaker, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, died peacefully on June 15. Born in 1924 on the island of Corfu, Greece, Mrs. Shoemaker came to East Tennessee in 1946, after meeting her future husband, Harley Shoemaker, after WWII in Athens, Greece. They married a year later, and she proudly became a naturalized American citizen in 1949. She lived in Scott County, Tennessee, until 1992 when she moved to Maryville to be nearer her grandsons. Mrs. Shoemaker was preceded in death by Mr. Shoemaker and her four siblings in Athens, Greece. She is survived by her son, Chester, and daughter, Sophia Metz (Fred); her grandsons, Eric Metz (Deanna) and Ellis Metz (Mary Cypress); and great-grandson Tate. She was an avid bridge player, gardener, world traveler and someone who tried to make the world a more beautiful place. Mrs. Shoemaker was an early member and benefactor of St. George Greek Orthodox Church, and the family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her name to St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 4070 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37919. Services will be held at St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Knoxville on Monday, June 19. Visitation and viewing will begin at 10:30 a.m. with funeral service to follow at 11:00. Immediately after the service, a luncheon will be provided. Interment will be at Grandview Cemetery in Maryville, TN.
