Lloyd Huston Costner

March 9, 1938 — August 9, 2014

Lloyd Huston Costner was called home to be with his heavenly family and friends Saturday, August 9, 2014 in Walnut Cove, North Carolina. Lloyd was born March 9, 1938 and is preceded in death by brother in Law (Tom Brown), Brother in Law (Dale Love), his mother (Louvenia Skidmore Costner), brother (Joseph Wayne Costner), and Father (Claude Costner). Lloyd is of Methodist faith. Lloyd leaves behind a sister Mable Love Brown of Maryville, a son and daughter in law Thomas A. and Katherine A. Costner of Pilot Mountain, NC and a daughter Julie A. Costner of Maryville. Two Grandchildren, Kaitlyn N. Costner and Caleb T. Costner both of Pilot Mountain, NC. (1 niece and 5 nephews) Mark and June Shaw, Stan and Fran Love, The late Mark Love, Sam and Patsy Love, Mitch and Kimberly Love, and Henry and Chantel Love. Lloyd was a member of the 134th air to air refueling squadron at McGhee Tyson Air Force Base in Knoxville; TN. Lloyd faithfully served our country for 22 years as a boom operator on the KC97 and KC135 tankers. He actively served our Country in 1961 during the Berlin Crisis. Lloyd developed a strong work ethic, being born the son of a Sharecropper from Disco Road in Friendsville TN on the Charlie Hamil Farm. Lloyd could be found at Green Meadow Country Club caddying or working at the pro shop from the 3rd grade through graduating Alcoa High School in 1956. Lloyd attended Memphis State University in the footsteps of his brother on a Golf Scholarship; He also attended Middle Tennessee State and East Tennessee State. In 1956, he began working for Alcoa Aluminum Company (ALCOA) North Plant in the inspection department for a short stent before going to College. In 1959 Lloyd enlisted in the United States Air Force and upon returning from Tech School he began working at Southeastern Incorporated. Lloyd married Nancy Baumgardner Costner in 1961 and soon afterwards was activated to Berlin, Germany. Upon returning from active duty in 1962 he began his career at ALCOA for 25 years where began in the North Plant Production department, Metallurgy. He then moved to the West plant where he held the position of Powder and Pigments Superintendent upon closing the facility. He obtained an associate's degree from Pellissippi State in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering after the West Plant closed and he retired as a Mechanical foreman on the Hot Line North Plant. Lloyd had a strong passion for his community, schools, and the advancement of children in the field of technology and academics. Lloyd was elected to the Alcoa School board of education from 1977 to 1985. He also was elected to serve as chairman for the last four year term. During this time his children had the honor of receiving their high school diploma from their father. Lloyd was also involved with the Jay Cee's, a member of the ALCOA 25 year club, VFW, AA, and the Peckerheads Car Club. Lloyd had many hobbies and passions such as: golf, race car driving, NASCAR racing, mechanic and electrical work, sheet metal fabricating, listening to bluegrass and gospel music and loved restoring classic automobiles. He will be sadly missed by the many folks far and near that he has touched throughout the years. If you were ever at the Waffle House on Alcoa highway you probably ran into him sitting in the corner with the big mustache, a blue denim shirt, and drinking a cup of coffee. There are many tales that you may have heard about him in his younger days and they could be true or vicious rumor as Lloyd would say. But the one's you didn't hear about was the side you may not have seen, such as the drifter he picked up one evening and took to the bus station and gave him a warm meal and a ticket to his next destination or the time he would get into a small doll house and play restaurant with his granddaughter and the many folks that he gave money to with no strings attached in a time of need. He had a way of bringing a smile to his grandsons face when he would fire up the Hemi truck and take him to the car shows or to deliver hams to his friends at Christmas. The Costner family would like to thank all of the family and friends for their support during our time of need. There is not enough paper to write all of the names down, but we would like to recognize a few.
