La Verne M. Long

August 23, 1926 — August 6, 2006

Long, LaVerne M. of Santa Barbara, CA, formerly of Maryville, passed away Sunday, August 6, 2006 at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. LaVerne was born Amanda LaVerne McDonald in Fort Worth, TX to Sally and Frank McDonald. She grew up in Robbinsville, North Carolina, and Maryville, Tennessee, during the Depression. During World War II, LaVerne was a living "Rosie the Riveter" working at Oak Ridge, TN on munitions. She is a graduate of the University of Tennessee with a Masters Degree in Education. She is a Past Program Director and proud member of the Santa Barbara Women's Club. LaVerne was an educator in MI, FL, GA and CA. Generous, funny and vivacious, LaVerne enjoyed family gatherings and travel. LaVerne had many friends in Santa Barbara, CA. A strong believer in the power of education, LaVerne made great sacrifices to ensure that her grandchildren completed higher degrees, opening her home and her heart. Family members never questioned LaVerne's fierce loyalty in ensuring their well-being and advancement. LaVerne is survived by her son Gary Millsaps; daughter Tommie Rae Barnett; daughter-in-law Mary Jo Millsaps; stepchildren Chuck, Eric and Pat Long; grandchildren Lara Millsaps, Scott, Lora and Bretta Barnett; Shelly, Brenda, Raymond, Patrick and Griffin Long; great grandchildren Sydney, Bailey and Ethan Barnett. Graveside service and interment will be at 10:00 AM, Saturday, August 12, 2006 at Zion Chapel Cemetery in Louisville. Smith Mortuary, Maryville, 865-983-1000.
