Kenneth (Ken) W. Marmon, MD, age 83, passed away at home Sunday, July 10, 2022 in Maryville, TN. Ken was born on Maury Street in Alcoa, TN on August 18, 1938 to Kenneth G and Ellen Merrill Marmon. Ken worked as a newspaper carrier for the Knoxville News-Sentinel and earned his Eagle Scout badge while in high school. As an adult, Ken served as a Scout Leader and accompanied his grandson (Corey) on a backpacking trek at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico.
Ken earned his diploma from Alcoa High School in 1956, BS degree from University of Tennessee at Knoxville in 1959, and MD degree from UT – Memphis in 1962. He served in the Tennessee Army National Guard while in college and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society while in medical school. Ken completed a one-year rotating internship and one-year pediatric residency at Mid-State Baptist Hospital in Nashville and a one-year pediatric residency at University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky.
Ken began his medical practice in general pediatrics in Maryville in 1966 and became a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics in 1969. He co-founded the Maryville Pediatric Group in 1980. He retired from private practice in 1993 to join the Tennessee Department of Public Health as a District Health Officer. He retired from the Health Department in 2012.
Ken enjoyed skiing, traveling, and hiking. He especially enjoyed hiking as a lifelong passion and completed 90% of the Appalachian Trial. He was a member of the New Providence Presbyterian Church of Maryville for more than 50 years and served one term as an Elder.
Preceded in death by parents; sisters, Mary Ellen Wilson, Doris Voorhees; son, Kenneth (Kenny) Marmon; former wife, Dora Heacker Marmon. Survived by; wife of 54 years, Joan Barker Marmon; sons, Steven Marmon (wife Lori), Sam Marmon (wife Karen), Greg Marmon (wife Cassy); grandsons, Corey, Alex, Joshua; granddaughters, Emily and Abby Marmon, Stacy Fugate (husband Taylor); several nieces and nephews. The family is grateful to his wonderful caregivers, including Steve Barker (brother-in-law), Carroll Henry, Vera Graves (niece), Blount Memorial Hospice, and Home Instead.
