Karen Ann Harte Schito, loving wife, mother, and friend, died on October 16, 2024. She endured a tremendous battle with glioblastoma (brain cancer) with unwavering love and an unbreakable spirit. Karen’s courage shone brightly as she loved all those around her during the most difficult and challenging times. She is an inspiration.
Karen was born on December 2, 1972, to Ronald Kenneth Harte and Carmen Inez Harte. She spent her childhood in Forrest City, Pennsylvania where she developed life-long friendships that would become family. After high school, Karen attended East Stroudsburg University and graduated with a degree in Elementary Education in 1994. Karen was a true example of a life-long learner and educator. She earned Masters’ degrees in elementary education, educational administration, principal (K-12) and superintendent certifications.
Karen was both a 6th grade teacher and Assistant Principal serving several schools within the Pocono Mountain School District in PA until relocating to Louisville, TN in 2017. Highly regarded for her compassion, integrity, and commitment to her students, Karen was always kind and caring. After relocating to Tennessee, Karen became the Principal of Foothills Elementary School in the Maryville School District. It was evident from the beginning of her time there that Karen would continue to give her all to the community that she served.
Karen’s legacy as an educator in both Pennsylvania and Tennessee will be remembered as many have been inspired by her genuine ability to connect with students, families and colleagues. She dedicated her life not only to her family but also shaping the lives of countless students leading with compassion, wisdom and strength. Her impact extended far beyond the walls of the schools for which she served, leaving her mark of inspiration and love. She brought out the very best in others, making each individual feel valued.
Everyone who knew Karen would agree that her greatest love was for her family. She was a loving wife and partner to Sal. They married on August 8, 1998. Together, they built a life filled with laughter, love, and adventure. She was a proud mom to her boys, Albert (AJ), Salvatore (Sal Sal), and Gabe. Her boys were her greatest accomplishment and her unending source of joy and inspiration. Karen was the mom that others aspired to be.
Karen’s spirit will carry on in the hearts of all that were fortunate to know and adore her. Karen’s innate ability to make others feel at ease was a gift. Known as “Ti-Ti” to her nieces and nephews, her bright smile, hugs and baking will be remembered. Family gatherings were a common occurrence as everyone was in awe of her ability to prepare very special meals. She made every holiday a family event and daily meal feel special. Karen’s warmth, laughter and unwavering support will forever remain with us.
