John Wilson Self, age 70, of Maryville, passed away on July 31, 2017 after a fierce battle with cancer. He retired from TVA after more than 20 years of service. He then worked with FEMA as a contractor with BVI for 20 years, helping municipalities that experienced a disaster. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, loved the outdoors, and spending time with his family. He is preceded in death by his parents, James Sanford Self and Ola Mae Connatser Self; and sisters, Joyce Marie Self, and Edith Mae Self Barry. He is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Susan Lynne Knipp Self; children, Kristi Lynne Self Foxx (Allen), John Bradley Self (Sherry), and Amy Elisabeth Self Scott (Greg); grandchildren, Johnathan Gorenflo, and Maggie Self; siblings, Betty Self McCall (Hugh), Phyllis Self Loveday (Marvin), and James Self (Martha Cross); brother-in-law, David Barry; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family. The family will receive friends at Smith Funeral Home on Friday, August 4, 2017 from 5:00-6:00pm, with a Celebration of John's Life to follow at 6:00pm, with Steve Linginfelter officiating.
