John C. Mayes age 91 passed away Friday, November 3, 2017 at MorningView. He was a WW II Veteran and the former owner of Mayes IGA Foodliners. John worked for Cas Walker for over 25 years and had 10 years of service at Thrifty Nickle Classified. He was a longtime Sunday School Teacher and Deacon at Bell Avenue/Chilhowee Baptist Church in Knoxville and a member of First Baptist of Alcoa. Preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Crowder Mayes; parents, Carl and Hazel Mayes; brother, Jess Mayes, Sr.; sister, Allie Mae King. Survivors include his sons and daughters –in-law, Wayne and Linda Mayes of Knoxville, and Denny and Cindy Mayes of Alcoa; grandchildren, Chris and Jennifer Mayes, Keli and David Ramsey, Bethany and Matthew Besson, Brett and Casey Mayes; eleven great grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Margaurite Williams of Blaine, TN, Dorothy and Sam Slagle of Hermit, CA, Juanita and John Conley of Corryton, TN; brothers and sister-in-law, Jackie and Barbara Mayes, Sr. of Corryton, TN, and Jerry Mayes of Blaine, TN; several nieces and nephews. Family and friends will assemble at 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 6, 2017 at Clear Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, 3709 Clear Springs Road, Mascot, TN 37806 for the interment. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church Alcoa, 819 Gilbert Street, Alcoa, TN 37701 or Black Oak Heights Baptist Church, 405 Black Oak Drive, Knoxville, TN 37912. The guestbook will be available to sign on Sunday from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
