John S. Bird

John Stanley Bird born September 29, 1922 passed away October 14, 2007 born in Maryville his family moved to South Carolina when he was a small child. After graduating from Dreher High School and attending the University of South Carolina, John returned to his beloved Smokie Mountains. Mr. Bird served as a pilot flying "the Hump" in China Burma India Theater during World War II and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medals for his service. He achieved the rank of second lieutenant. John returned to Alcoa where he worked managing the metallurgical laboratory until his retirement in 1977. John was an avid hunter, fisherman, and golfer. Preceded in death by: Sisters, Elizabeth Lorick and Mabel Ruth Bird; Brothers, Paul Bird and Joseph Bird; Special Boyhood friend and cousin, Dr. Harry Stratton.
