Janet Elaine Shumaker-Copland, age 84 of Maryville, passed away Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at Asbury Place in Maryville, TN.
Janet is preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, James Copland and her daughter, Christina Copland-Butler. Survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Timothy and Susannah Copland; four grandchildren, True, Michael, Nicholas, and Catherine.
Janet grew up on a farm in Jacksonville IL where she tended live-stock, learned to drive a tractor, and played piano, which became a life-long passion. Early in life she developed a love for music and achieved a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from Mac Murray College in Jacksonville IL, where she was the president of the Student Chapter of the National Music Educator's Conference. She earned her Master's in Music Education from Northwestern University.
Janet's first job away from the farm was teaching Music in public schools from Farmington IL to Des Plains IL, and Chicago. She also taught private piano lessons out of her home and was the Treasurer of the Orff Schulwerk Musical Organization: Chicago Chapter. In her mid-40's Janet retired from teaching and switched into computers and computer education and eventually took a job managing a network for a nuclear power plant and invested in real estate.
In 2011, Janet moved to Maryville, TN to be closer to her children and grandchildren. She was a loving mother and grandmother and is dearly missed.
Family will receive friends from 10:00 until 10:30 AM Friday, March 10, 2023 at Smith East Chapel with a Funeral Service to follow at 10:30 AM. She will be laid to rest in Diamond Grove Cemetery in Jacksonville, IL beside her parents Ava and John Shumaker.
