James Turner Hrom Sr., born on August 30, 1953, in Memphis, Tennessee passed away Saturday, February 1, 2025 surrounded by his loving family. James was a longtime resident of south Alabama before moving to Tennessee in 2003.
He received his Bachelors of Psychology at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, AL and his Masters in Clinical Counseling at Troy State University in Troy, AL. He dedicated 30 years of work to the Baldwin County Mental Health Center. He retired from that role in 2003. James then pursued his second career as a licensed Registered Nurse (RN) through Walters State Community College in Sevierville, TN. He worked as a nurse for another 20 years at Leconte Medical Center where he earned a Professional Nursing Clinical Excellence award, retiring in December 2023.
James, a true gentleman, loved to spend time with his family, landscaping, gardening and working on projects around the house. He loved to cook, and was especially good at “Papa Burgers”, “Papa Breakfasts”, pound cake, and bean dip. His journey on this earth was one marked by love, compassion, and unwavering faith in God. His passing has left a void in the hearts of his family, friends, and many more whose lives were touched by him. We ask that you remember James for the profound impact he had on the lives of those who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Preceded in death by his son, Stephen Andrew Hrom, and his parents, John Stewart Hrom Sr. and Rachel Elizabeth Hrom.
He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Marie Andrews Hrom; Son and Daughter-in-law James "Jimmy" Turner Hrom Jr. and Anna Hrom and their children James "Jay" Turner Hrom III and Rachel Hrom (Washington, DC); Daughter and Son-in-law, Elizabeth Marie and Raymond Merickel and their children Abbigail Merickel and Addison Merickel (Maryville, TN); Sister and Brother-in-law, Liz and Wayne Hawkins (Mobile, AL); Brother and Sister-in-law, John and Debbie Hrom (Madison, MS). His memory lives on with his Nieces and Nephews; Family in Love, Julie Maurand and Obed McPherson, and many beloved friends.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 08, 2025 from 9:00 until 10:00 AM at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church located at 7719 River Road, Townsend, TN 37882. A Celebration of James’ Life and Funeral Mass will follow at 10:00 AM with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to God’s Planet for Haiti (GPFH) (www.godsplanetforhaiti.org). This ministry is near to James and Marie. GPFH’s mission is to bring the gospel of Jesus Christ to the Haitian people along with medical and dental assistance and to meet the needs of the children through education.
