James Patrick “Pat” Flynn, age 69, of Maryville, passed away peacefully, with his family by his side, after a brief and courageous battle with leukemia. Pat was a steady, kind and supportive spouse, father, grandfather, son, sibling and friend.
Pat is a 1972 graduate of Everett High School. His career at Alcoa Fire Department began in 1978, and he served as fire inspector from 1987 through his retirement in 2009. Pat was a devoted husband to Carole and father to Chris and Nicholas. Throughout his lifetime, Pat spent much of his time in the service of others. He always noticed a need and helped in a multitude of ways, whether cooking a warm meal, bringing his tools to complete a project, or volunteering at Special Olympics. Pat supported Carole in her business, Carole’s School of Baton, for many years. Pat and Carole spent their retirement years traveling and enjoying their family. In recent years, Pat faithfully cared for Carole as they navigated her cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Pat (Dad, brother, Granddaddy) was taken from us too soon and too quickly. We will miss his quick but quiet wit, his strong and steady manner and his immense breadth of knowledge which was offered only with quietly delivered words, and preceded by “honey” when he wanted to make sure he was heard. His boys will miss his regular sports updates, and his friends will miss time spent tinkering.
Committed to continuing his legacy of service, Pat is survived by his loving family, including wife of 48 years, Carole Hatcher Flynn, son and daughter-in-law Chris & Leah Flynn, son and partner Nicholas Flynn and Lindsey Hale, grandsons Jack and Sam Flynn, brother & sister-in-law Mike & Denette Flynn, brother Dennis Flynn, sister Kelly Bailey, Carole’s brothers & sisters-in-law Mike & Kelly Hatcher and Steve & Carol Hatcher, and many special nieces and nephews. Pat’s legacy also survives in beloved friends including retired Alcoa Fire Department members, staff of A-1 Automotive, and countless others who enjoyed his kind spirit over the years. Pat is preceded in death by his mother, Aileen Tarkington, father Olin Flynn, and mother-in-law and father-in-law Joyce and Charles Hatcher.
