James Garland Brown age 89 of Sweetwater passed away Sunday, June 25, 2023 at Wood Village Senior Living. Jim was born to Garland Swaine Brown and ruth Bachman Brown on November 24, 1933 in Brooklyn, New YorkHe married Sylvia Amelia Holliday of Georgetown, SCF in 1956, and they had three children; Julia Childers and husband Alan Childers of Farragut, TN, James Holliday Brown and wife Tracy, and Thomas Garland Brown and wife Vicki, all of York, PA.  He is also survived by five grandchildren; Nancy Childers Cranford and husband Charles Cranford of Malawi, Africa, Brian Childers of Farragut, Michael Brown, Daniel Brown and Dan’s wife Marina and a great-grandson Cameron Brown of York, and Ashley Brown of Middletown, PA.  Jim is also survived by sister, Nancy Brown Lewis of Charlottesville, VA. Following Sylvia’s death in 1978, Jim married Carole Rutledge Burgess of Martinsville, VA in 1979, who had two children, John Ansley Burgess II now of Naples, FL, and Robin Sue Burgess (DeRiseis) now of Mooresville, NC. Jim graduated from Ridgewood (NJ) High School in 1951, and from the University of South Caroline in 1955 on an NROTC Scholarship with a degree in Mechanical EngineeringFollowing service as a US Naval Officer, he received a scholarship to, and graduated from The Chrysler Institute of Engineering in 1060 with a Masters Degree in Automotive Engineering, and was employed as an engineer at the Chrysler Corporation, and Martin Aircraft where he worked on the Saturn rocket.  He then enjoyed a long career at DuPont, as an engineer and manager, working at five Textile Fibers Plants, and also at DuPont Electronics in PA, from which he retired in 1985. Following retirement, Jim administered a Psychiatric Hospital in Naples, FL.  He later did management consulting, and became a licensed Residential Contractor, and as a Realtor and Broker while residing in coastal NC.  Jim’s interest included auto crossing sports cars, flying small airplanes (Jim as a licenses pilot with an Instrument Rating), sailing, and building small boatsHowever, Jim counted as his greatest achievement, accepting Yeshua HaMaschiac (Jesus) as his Lord and Savior. In 2009, Jim and Carole moved to Sweetwater, TN.  Jim and Carole were committed Christians, and for over 25 years have been devoted to studying the Jewish roots of Christianity, now attending the Shomair Yisrael Messianic Jewish Congregation in Knoxville. Family and friends will assemble at 10:00 AM on Friday, July 07, 2023 at East Tennessee Veterans Cemetery for the graveside service and interment with Rabbi Mike Weiner officiating.
