Jackson Theodore Murphy

Murphy, Jackson Theodore (Ted), age 83, of Oak Ridge, Tn. and formerly of Fair Haven, New Jersey passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 21, 2012 with his loving wife Wilma at his side. Born in Red Bank, New Jersey in 1928, Ted was a graduate of Red Bank High School and then went on to further his education at Central College in Iowa and finally Monmouth College in NJ. Ted was a dedicated and talented baseball player, he successfully competed throughout his high school, college and military service years before laying his glove down to raise a family. Ted spent the majority of his years in Fair Haven, where he was active in the town’s pop warner football program and little league baseball program. He also introduced the boys of the town to youth boxing. Ted was an avid traveler, having visited all fifty states and over twenty countries. A dedicated and passionate family man, Ted started out at New Jersey Natural Gas before moving on to work at B. Altman’s in New York. After years there, wanting to be closer to his family he purchased and operated The Cellar Liquor Store in Fair Haven. After retiring Ted moved to Maryville, Tn. where he continued to oversee his constantly growing family. Ted was preceded in death by his parents Jack and Lucy Murphy and his wife of fifty-five years, Barbara. Left to cherish his memory and carry on his tremendous love of family are his wife, Wilma Baumgardner Murphy, son Steve Murphy, son and daughter-in-law Tom and Connie Murphy, daughter and son-in-law Kathy and Phil McCutcheon, daughter and son-in-law Anne and Gordy Gilbertson and Wilma’s son Dan Mantooth. Ted also leaves behind nine loving grandchildren and four great grand-children. The family will receive friends on Tuesday April 24, 2012 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Smith Funeral and Cremation Service. Funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday April 25, 2012 in the Smith Trinity Chapel with interment following service at Grandview Cemetery. Smith Funeral and Cremation Service 865-983-1000.
