Jack Ross Johnson, age 76 of Maryville passed away on Sunday July 10, 2011 at Asbury Place Maryville. He was a devoted Christian and loving Daddy. After graduating from Lenoir City High School in 1952, he served honorably in the United States Air Force from 1953 until 1957 with the 72nd Bomb Squadron, Strategic Air Command. After education at Middle Tennessee State University and Bowling Green College of Commerce, now Western Kentucky University, he served his country for many years as a computer scientist with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) during the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, and Space Shuttle programs. Once he left NASA, he was a full time father to his sons Stephen and Robert and caregiver to his mother Nell when they lived in Kenton, Tennessee. In his last months, he received tender and loving care from the nursing staff of The Village at Asbury Place Maryville. He is survived by his brother Bobby J. Johnson and his wife Elva of Athens, Alabama; his children Mark D. Walters of Grand Bay, Alabama; Leigh Ann Mycko of Hawaii and her children Richard and Laura; Dawn Marie White of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky; Stephen Ross Johnson, his wife Brooke, and their children Ross and India of Maryville, Tennessee; and CAPT. Robert J. Johnson, USAF, and his wife Taryn of Washington, D.C. Receiving of friends at 6:00pm and a memorial service at 7:00pm on Wednesday, July 13, 2011 will be at Smith Mortuary, 1402 Tuckaleechee Pike, Maryville, TN. A military honors ceremony and burial will be held on Thursday, July 14, 2011 at 11:30am at East Tennessee State Veteran’s Cemetery, 5901 Lyons View Pike, Knoxville, TN.
