Hope DeButy Marine

Hope DeButy Marine, 93, passed away Thursday, July 28, 2011. Born in Blount County on October 4, 1918, Hope was in the first graduating class of Lanier High in 1935. After graduation from Maryville College in 1939 she began her teaching career. She married Kenneth Blaine in 1943 and they recently celebrated their 68th Anniversary. She and Kenneth taught in several states including Georgia, Alaska, and West Virginia. Returning to Blount County in 1964 she taught English in Knox Co. and Blount County Schools. She received an M.S. and Ed.S. in counseling and school psychology from UT, and served as guidance counselor at Everett High and later as school psychologist for Blount County Schools. Education was always her passion and she touched many lives through her years of service. She was member New Providence Presbyterian Church. Hope is survived by her husband, Kenneth B. Marine; her son and daughter-in-law Kenneth, Jr. and Sandy Marine; and nieces, Virginia Walters, Theresa Sawyer, and Jeannette Pendelton. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 pm on Sunday July 31, 2011 at Smith Funeral and Cremation Service. The service will begin at 2:00 pm with Rev. Beecher Whitehead officiating and the burial will follow at Boone Cemetery in Happy Valley. Smith Funeral and Cremation Service, Maryville.
