Dr. Herbert Pitner Whittle, M.D.

Whittle, Dr. Herbert Pitner�born November 19, 1921 passed away on December 3, 2007 at his home in Shannondale of Maryville, Tennessee. He was a member of Tellico Village Community Church. Following graduation from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and its College of Medicine, Memphis, he served his internship at old Knox General Hospital. Returning from the Army Medical Corp in 1948, he completed his residency in Pediatrics at Knox General before entering private practice for 27 years in Etowah and Athens. He then went into industrial medicine as Olin Chemical's Medical Director based in Charleston, Tennessee for 13 years. Retiring from practice in 1987, he continued his medical services part-time at Olin and Bowater Paper Corporation of Calhoun, Tennessee. He was a member of the Medical Societies of McMinn County, Tennessee, and America. Dr. Whittle served as a Diplomat of both the American Academy of Family Practice and the Academy of Occupational Medicine. During his industrial medicine years, he worked with the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, on numerous environmental studies. He was a member of the Chlorine Institute and the Tennessee Commission of Industrial Health. Dr. Whittle served as a member of the Etowah School Board, was Unaka District Director of the Boy Scouts of America, and was an ordained lay speaker in the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents Herbert Pitner Whittle, Sr., and Louise Webb Whittle and by his son-in-law Patrick Ellington, MD. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Rita Cockrell Whittle; daughter Karen Ellington of Fort Myers, Florida; son and daughter-in-law Chris and Priscilla of New York, New York; daughter and son-in-law Camille and Bob Hanggi of Knoxville; and brother Robert Bruce Whittle, MD, and his wife Jo of Knoxville. Also surviving are grandson Matthew Hanggi, MD, and wife Jill Hanggi, and grandaughter Sarah Kennedy and husband Charles Kennedy, all of Knoxville, and granddaughters Andrea and Sasha Whittle of New York, New York, and great grandchildren Samuel Hanggi, Avery Hanggi and Gray Kennedy of Knoxville. There will be a memorial service to celebrate the life of Dr. Herbert Whittle at 6:30 PM on Tuesday, December 11, 2007 at The Tellico Village Community Church with Reverend Marty Singley officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, P. O.
