Attending Loma Linda University Medical School, he graduated with the class of 1947. A first-rate scholar, the university engaged him as a professor of Physiology in 1948. Taking a leave of absence, he earned a PhD in Physiology at the University of Chicago in 1956 and returned to teach until 1959. From 1959 until 1963, he served as Professor of Physiology at the University of Arkansas School of Medicine and also conducted related research which lead to a position as Chief of Clinical Pharmacology at Schering Pharmaceuticals in Bloomfield, New Jersey from 1963 until 1969. Possessed of an active mind and curious nature, he was a lifelong student of great music and literature, spending many happy hours immersed in his beloved Bach and Montaigne. A gifted amateur artist, his prized watercolors grace the walls of homes and offices of friends and family. Millard was also a lifelong student of philosophy and the world he lived in. He was writing his fifth novel at the time of his death. All who knew him enjoyed his lively company, conversation and insight. An outspoken advocate of regular exercise, he was an inveterate walker and even in the last few years of his life spent much time swimming and rowing on Lake Melissa at the Olson family home place in Detroit Lakes Minnesota where he and his family spent 58 summers. He is survived by Sue Olson Smith (LLU School of Nursing, 56B), his wife of 57 years and children; son Mark and wife Molly, daughter Melissa Goldstein and husband Joel, daughter Evans Bowen and husband Hamilton and son Andrew and wife Ginger, ten grandchildren, and five step-grandchildren, sisters and brothers-in law Doris and Hilton Suddarth and Barbara and Robert Goyne, sisters-in-law Ellen Gilbert and Sally Tuck and ten nieces and nephews.
