Glen Fielden Nicely born December 12, 1918, to Simeon L. and Martha (Mattie) Beeler Nicely, passed away Sunday, October 18, 2009, at Morning View Assisted Living in Maryville, TN. Glen graduated from Washburn High School in Grainger County. He attended Maryville College and the University of Tennessee graduating from UT in 1939. He was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church in Maryville and the Sparkplug Sunday School class. Glen taught Vocational Agriculture in Renick, WV for five years and returned to Tennessee before going to Seoul, Korea, to work for U.S. Government in land management. He later owned car dealerships in Greenville and Erwin, TN. He was Tennessee Commissioner of Conservation and Executive Assistant to Gov. Frank Clement before going to Johnson City as an Industrial Agent. Glen worked with Vector Corporation (later Whitaker Corp) developing moderate and low income housing in the Knoxville area. With his own company, Rural Development, he later contracted housing for Farmer’s Home Administration in West Virginia, Tennessee, Virginia, and Kentucky. He built and managed both Garden Vale and Meadowood Apartments in Blount County. He had a life-long interest in education and established scholarships at: Carson-Newman College, University of Tennessee, Hiawassee College, Lincoln Memorial University, and Pellissippi State Community College. Glen was preceded in death by: five brothers, Burl, A.Clifton, Sidney, Halmer, and Layron; sister, Mossie N. Kitts. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Margaret Irons Nicely of Maryville; two stepsons, Dr. Larry Rollins and wife Susan of Lenoir City and Col. Robert Coit and wife Laura of Alexandria, VA; grandchildren, Jennifer Rollins Thornton, Bryan Rollins, Paige Presley, Ethan, Emily, and Elyse Coit; two great-grandsons, Andrew & Quillen Thornton; several nieces and one nephew. Memorial service will be at 7:00 PM, Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at Smith Trinity Chapel with Dr. Jerry Russell officiating. Family and friends will assemble at 11:00 AM, Thursday, October 22, 2009 at Sherwood Memorial Gardens for the inurnment. In lieu of floral offerings, please make memorial offerings to the Fairview United Methodist Church Building Fund, 2508 Old Niles Ferry Road, Maryville, TN 37803.
