Gertrud Kiger

Gertrud Kiger, age 82, of Maryville, passed away Monday, Aug. 1, 2016, at home, surrounded by her family. She was born in the town of Wittighausen in south-central Germany, one of six children. She worked in Stuttgart for a time and then ran two restaurants before moving overseas to Newport, Tennessee, with her family in 1968. She has lived in Maryville since 1969, a loving and proud mother and grandmother, and an entrepreneur who owned businesses including The Ladies Slipper Shoe Store in Alcoa. A courageous and independent woman, she had great strength and an indomitable spirit and loved to laugh with family and friends, including those at the National Guard’s Armed Forces Club, VFW Post 5154 and her water aerobics class at the Blount Memorial Hospital Wellness Center at Springbrook. Survivors include sons Ulrich Gienger, of Dallas, with wife Nancy & their daughters Laura, Allison & Elizabeth; David Kiger, of Knoxville, with wife Rebecca & sons Ryan and Matthew; and Roger Kiger, of Knoxville, with wife Jan; daughter Viola Gienger of Washington DC; brother Bruno Hamberger, of Germany, with wife Hiltrud and daughter Silvia; sister-in-law Else Hamberger of Germany; nephew Edward B. Yarbrough, with partner Len Greaney, of Austin; as well as devoted nieces and nephews in Germany. Family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. Thursday, August 4, 2016, at Smith Trinity Chapel. Funeral service will follow at 6:00 p.m. Family and friends will assemble for graveside and interment service at 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 5, 2016 at Sherwood Memorial Gardens.
