Gerda Helene Kessler

April 3, 1929 — March 8, 2013

Gerda Helene Kessler, age 83, of Maryville, passed away Friday, March 8, 2013 at Blount Memorial Hospital after a courageous battle with Leukemia. Mrs. Kessler was born and grew up in Germany prior to WWII, coming to America in 1957 to accomplish the American dream. She was a tremendous homemaker and a very talented gardener, seamstress, and cook specializing in German pastries. She had a great love for nature and the outdoors, particularly feeding and caring for wild birds. She was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be deeply missed by those she leaves behind. Preceded in death by her brothers, Arnold Mühlenfels and Mandfred Mühlenfels. She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Gerd Kessler; Daughter and son-in-law, Silvily and Emry Thomas of Los Angeles; Son and daughter-in-law, Gerald and Megan Kessler of Maryville; Grandchildren, Greg Kessler, Erica St. James, Imari Thomas, Alex Kessler, Morgan Kessler, and Emily Kessler; Great-grandchildren, Halona England and Chilton St. James;sister, Inge Rothig and brother-in-law Rudi Rothig (Seattle); niece, Annette Taylor of Germany, and many family, friends, and special pet, Tascha also survive. A Celebration of Gerda's Life will be held at 7:00pm on Tuesday, March 12, 2013 in the Smith East Hall with a time of visitation starting at 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers please make memorial contributions in Gerda's honor to the Audubon Society 225 Varick St New York, NY 10014.
