Ellen Marie Fowlkes

Ellen Marie Johnson Fowlkes, age 93, of Maryville passed away on June 30, 2023 at Blount Memorial Hospital. Born on June 7, 1930 in Grainger Co, Tn to Ann and Clay Johnson. Her father Passed away when she was 3 and the family moved to Knoxville where she Graduated from Old Knoxville High School in 1949. The family moved to Maryville and that is where she met her future husband, Raymond Fowlkes, living up the street from her. They were married in 1950 and the beautiful journey began. In their union they had two daughters, Susan Gail Fowlkes, who died in infancy, and Terry Sue Fowlkes.  During the 1960's Raymond was a member of the Blount Co Rescue Squad and Marie was a member of the Crewettes. In 1978 Marie became a Licensed Practical Nurse and was employed at Chilhowee Nursing Home. In the 1980's upon Raymond's retirement, they decided to travel thru the United States and all over the world. Over the years Marie would sew beautiful garments and won many awards. She loved to bowl and was on a team for years. She was known for her amazing cooking for her family and friends. In her later years her hobbies were watching westerns and working puzzles. She is preceded in death by husband, Raymond Fowlkes; daughter, Susan Gail Fowlkes; mother and stepfather, Ann and Jack Stinnett; father, John Clay Johnson; and sister, Bertie Jean Johnson. She is survived by her daughter and best friend, Terry Sue Fowlkes, nieces, nephews, cousins and sister-in-law, Rachel Beck of KY.  Graveside service and interment will be at 1:00 PM, Thursday, July 6, 2023 at East Maryville Baptist Church Cemetery.  Smith Funeral & Cremation Service, Maryville, 865-983-1000, www.SmithFuneralandCremation.com.
