Elizabeth Inez Lawson Calkin, beloved wife and mother, went home to be with the Lord early Sunday morning, November 9, 2008. Born in Rockford, Tennessee in 1930, she graduated from Townsend High School and starred in basketball. After attending East Tennessee State University, Elizabeth worked as an elementary school teacher in Blount County. She met and married James A. Calkin of Greeneville, Tennessee and lived for a short period in Germany while Jim served in the Korean War. Upon returning home from Europe, Elizabeth settled in Tennessee, having four children, Jim Jr., Mark, Robyn and Peter. She later lived in Atlanta, Georgia and Indianapolis, Indiana before returning again to Maryville where she worked and lived for the next 31 years. Elizabeth was a devout Christian, loving wife and devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a precious friend and caregiver to many, and will be sorely missed by all of her family and friends. Preceded in death by: husband, James A. Calkin Sr., parents, Ila Mary and Arville R. Lawson, brothers William and Ray Tipton, sisters Lorena Johnson and Ruth Maddox.Survivors include: son and daughter-in-law James A. Calkin Jr. and Elizabeth Calkin of Maryville, TN., son and daughter-in-law Mark and Jean Calkin of Cincinnati, OH., daughter and son-in-law Robyn and Anthony Mastandrea of Athens, GA., son Peter Calkin of Maryville, TN., grandchildren Kathy McKeehan, Kristin Coleman and Derrick Calkin of Maryville, TN., Sydney and Ben Calkin of Cincinnati, OH., Rachel Thomas and Kelly Dickens of Gainesville,GA., and Matthew and Gabrielle Mastandrea of Athens, GA., great grandchildren Meghan, Ava, and Lydia McKeehan of Maryville, TN., Max Coleman of Maryville, TN., and Austin Dagan Free of Gainesville, GA., sister and brother-in-law Billie and Kenneth Williams of Knoxville, TN., brother and sister-in-law Fred and Sharon Lawson of Maryville, TN., sister Betty Hayes of Maryville, TN., many nieces and nephews and loving relatives. Visitation will be Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at First United Methodist Church (FUMC),804 Montvale Station Road, in Maryville, TN 37803. From 5:00 to 6:30, immediately followed by a memorial service at 6:30pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the FUMC Building Fund.
