Elizabeth (Beth) Imojean Gass Werndli age 78 of Maryville, passed away Saturday, May 14, 2011 at Fairpark Nursing Center. She was born in Chattanooga, TN and she lived in Summerville, GA during her early years. After attending David Lipscomb University she was a resident of Chattanooga for many years. She was active as a Mother and with involvement in many community service organizations: Church Sunday School, Cherokee Girl Scouts, PTA, Valmount Women’s Club, Civitan Civic Club, and was honored for being the first volunteer to deliver a “Meals on Wheels�? at the inception of the service in Chattanooga in the late 1960s. After moving to Kingsport, TN in 1986, she continued in service to the community by involvement in First Broad Street United Methodist Church Sanctuary Choir, Flames of Faith Ladies Ensemble, Joy Choir, Senior Adults Shepherding Program, Kingsport Newcomers Club, Kingsport Book Club and in providing service to individuals with severe vision problems. She moved to Maryville in 2000 in order to be close to family. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Maryville, UMW Circle 4 and the Garst Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her parents, Hurschel and Beauty Gass; sister, Opal Lou Trimble, brother, Harry Joe Gass. Survivors include her husband, James (Jim) Werndli; daughters & sons-in-law, Barbara & Garry Kahn of Maryville, Carol & John Shoun of Durham, NC; four grandchildren, Blade Caldwell, Betsy Caldwell both of Maryville, Abby Shoun Kaplan & husband, Aaron Kaplan of Salt Lake City, Utah, John Mark Shoun of USAF; great-grandson, Graham Shoun Kaplan of Salt Lake City. The family will receive friends from 3:00 pm until 3:30 pm Friday, May 20, 2011 at Smith Trinity Chapel. Memorial service will be at 3:30 pm. Private interment services will be held at Sherwood Memorial Gardens.
