Durwood H. Phillips

Durword H. Phillips, age 86, of Murphy,NC passed away Friday, September 2, 2011 at Murphy Medical Center. A longtime resident of Blount County and member of Broadway Baptist Church. He was a native of Cherokee County, NC and the son of the late John S. and Maggie Mae Kilpatrick Phillips. Durword was a self-employed home construction worker and had previously owned Shooks marina in Murphy for 10 years. He was a US World War II Army Veteran. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, James D. Phillips. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Janie L. Riddle Phillips; three sons, Donnie R. Phillips and his wife, Linda G., Jerry L. Phillips and his wife, Pam J., and David M. Phillips and his wife, Vickie L. all of Maryville, TN; grandchildren, Wesley Phillips and his wife, Ashley, Melody Phillips, Sarah Phillips, and Hannah Phillips; five great grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Max Phillips and his wife, Barbara, Bob Phillips and his wife Della Mae, Johnny Phillips and his wife, Carolyn, Bonnell McNeil, Ruby Cook, and Sandra Johnson and her husband, Bill all of Maryville, TN; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 PM Sunday, September 4, 2011 at the Townson Rose Funeral Home in Murphy, NC and again Monday, from 7:00 to 8:00 PM September 5, 2011 at the Smith Funeral & Cremation Service in Maryville, TN. Funeral Services will be held at 8:00 PM Monday, September 5, 2011 in the Smith East Chapel with The Rev. Harrison Hill officiating. The interment will be held at 11:00 AM in the Grandview Cemetery on Tuesday, September 6, 2011.
