Reva Dell Patterson

June 27, 1923 — April 21, 2008

Reva Dell Sutton Patterson. Reva went to be with God and her two baby boys on Monday, April 21, 2008 at her home. Reva loved to play piano. For years, she played for gospel quartets. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and served God and His church in many capacities: Communion Steward for many years, choir member, various office in the Women's Society of Christian Service at the local, district and conference levels including as board member of the Holston Home for Children. Once served as Registrar for the Holston Annual Conference when it was held in Knoxville. She worked in Horticulture the Tennessee Valley A & I Fair for many years. She was active in the Norwood Garden Club and Church Women United. She also served as an election official at Pleasant Ridge School. She was preceded in death by: infant sons, Steven Lee & Stanley Sutton; parents, Eva McDonald & Henry T. Sutton; Sister, Virginia R. Sutton; brother, Rex E. Sutton; brothers-in law, Jack B. Patterson and George Noakes; sister-in-law and husband, Geneva P. and James E. Montgomery; sister-in-law, Catherine Patterson. Reva was survived by Dwight, her husband for over 65 years and son Mark. Other surviving relatives include: a special brother-in-law, the Rev. Dr. Glenn C. Patterson; sister, Loretta Sutton Noakes; a caring sister-in-law and friend, Shirley Patterson; several beloved nieces and nephews; special niece, Gale Patterson Malone of Cookeville and her very special kind and caring husband, the Rev. C. Edward Malone of Cookeville formerly of Alcoa, TN; eleven grand nieces and nephews; and six great grand nieces and nephews; two special grand nieces and nephews who become my own family after the death of their grandfather, J.B. We spent many happy hours together walking the beaches in Fort Myers, FL where they gladly come on their own volition and visited for many hours talking to us, watching TV together, eating out on the beach and at their home in Fort Myers. How blessed indeed a life I have lived with these three. Finally, there is my beloved son, Mark whose entire focus of activity for the past several years is to make his mother happy and has agonized together for the last several years at this terrible disease. In spite of the pain she suffered, she knew me and she loved to see Mark. She knew Mark and smiled and was delighted when Mark called on the phone every evening. The sweet smile stayed until the very end even as she neared death. When she stopped smiling we knew she was fading but it came all too fast. Several months before she died, Mark left his own home and neglected his own business, his family, and his friends, and stayed with us before she died even as he and I agonized together over the setbacks. Family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 PM, Thursday, April 24, 2008 at Trinity United Methodist Church followed by a funeral service at 7:00 PM with Rev. Don Thomas and Rev. Dr. Glenn C. Patterson officiating. Family will assemble at 11:00 AM, Friday, April 25, 2008 at Smith Funeral & Cremation Service with the interment to follow at Grandview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Trinity United Methodist Church, 5613 Western Ave., Knoxville, TN 37921. Smith Funeral & Cremation Service, 865-983-1000.
