David Simmerly, age 83. After over 50 years as a teacher, coach, and father, Coach David Simmerly went on to be with his Lord and Savior Thursday. As an educator and coach at Eagleton Junior High from 1963-1979, William Blount High School 1979-1999, and Maryville Christian School 1999-2001, Coach had the opportunity to influence thousands of young people and accumulate more than 900 wins in baseball, basketball, football and volleyball. He resumed teaching in 2012 in Orange County, Florida, until finally retiring in 2016. Coach SIMM, as he was known in Winter Garden, Florida, was regularly seen either coaching or walking fields throughout Central Florida through October of this year.
A multiple Tennessee Baseball Coach of the Year and East Tennessee Coach Hall of Famer, Coach preferred to be with his family, including his wife of 56 years, Martha, sons, Jerry and Mark, and grandchildren, Hannah, Ryne, Mark-David, Casey and Anaka. Come join the family as we send Coach off and celebrate a job well done on Wednesday, November 6th with receiving of friends at 12:00 PM and service at 1:00 PM at his long-time home church, Calvary Baptist at 100 Rankin Rd in Alcoa. Graveside will follow at 3:00pm at Grandview Pavilion & Legacy Trail, 2316 Graves Rd, Maryville, TN 37803. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to Calvary Baptist Church, Alcoa, where David had previously served as Chairman of Deacons, VBS director and Sunday School director. Donations can be either mailed to or dropped in donation boxes at the church.
