Darrell Lee Terrell

Darrell Lee Terrell, age 84, of Maryville, formerly of Ashtabula, Ohio, passed away Wednesday, January 30, 2013. Born in St. Louis, he grew up in West Tennessee near Fulton KY. He was a graduate of Chestnut Glad and Fulton H.S., U.T. Martin Jr. College, Lincoln Memorial University (B.A.) and Catholic University of America. D.C., (M.S. in Library Science). Post graduate work was at Western Reserve, Cleveland, Ohio. He worked as a farm laborer; Seed Sampler (P & G, Memphis); Clerk, Bureau of Labor Statistics; Cataloger, Library of Congress (Washington, D.C.); Teacher, Harbor H.S., Ashtabula, Ohio; Library Administrator, Ashtabula Harbor Public Library; and Lib. Administrator and Teacher, Ashtabula Campus, Kent State University. He was involved with two library building projects, one public and one academic. He retired from K.S.U., Prof. Emeritus, Library Science. He was an Army Air Corps veteran. His church memberships were Methodist Episcopal and Society of Friends (Quaker). He led a seminar Sunday School Class in Ashtabula Harbor Methodist and in Friends Church, Maryville. He was currently a member of Maryville Friends Church. Preceded in death by: Wife of 49 years, Katy Dyer; Parents, Dean & Alma (Johns) Terrell; Older Brothers, Elverne Lane and John A., and younger brother, Kenneth. He is survived by: Brother & Sister-in-law, Norman & Wanda of Knoxville, TN; Sisters, Dorothy Connell of Fulton, KY, Mary Coles of Tulsa, OK, and Treva Pryor of Searcy, AR; Sister-in-law, Barbara Terrell of Union City, TN. He enjoyed telling stories to children in classes K-7 in Harbor Public and Mother of Sorrows Parochial schools and taught English, Library Science, and Children's Literature at Kent State University. His ceramic art was accepted for shows in three cities. He enjoyed writing in school and throughout his life. For eleven years, he was co-leader of a Great Books of Western World discussion group in Ashtabula. He organized an Art Film Series at Ashtabula Campus involving noted professionals for panel discussions. One year's program received an Ohio Arts and Humanities award. He organized one very successful Children's Book Fair at the Ashtabula fine Arts Center. He was a member and officer in Kiwanis and Toastmaster's, and a member of Audubon in Ashtabula. An article about speaking was published in Toastmaster's International magazine. He was an avid gardener and bird watcher. He and his wife enjoyed camping and traveling. They camped the Northern and Southern Routes of U.S. and parts of Queen's Highway, Canada. From mid-life, he was plagued by hearing loss and chronic back problems. He was a recovering alcoholic. He suffered bouts of clinical depression. In Washington, D.C., he volunteered for teaching English as Second Language teaching. In retirement years, he worked as a volunteer for A.A.R. P income tax preparation, Adult Education (Reading), and Hospice of Maryville. The body will be cremated. A memorial service will be at 11:00 AM, Monday, February 4, 2013 at the Life Event Center, 1404 Tuckaleechee Pike, Maryville, TN 37803. The family requests no flowers please.
