Coralyn Sue Olson Smith, known as Sue to her friends and family, was born in Hinsdale, Illinois on July 29, 1934, to parents Harold and Aletha Evans Olson. She died on November 5, 2021, at the age of 87 in Maryville, Tennessee. Sue spent her childhood at Riverside Place Resort on Lake Melissa in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. She graduated in the class of 1956 from Loma Linda University School of Nursing. In 1958 she married Millard Smith, MD, in Redlands, California, and later moved to Little Rock, Arkansas, and Plainfield, New Jersey. In 1971 the family moved to Madison, Tennessee. In 2001, Sue and Millard retired to Colorado Springs, Colorado. After Millard’s death in 2015, Sue moved to Maryville, Tennessee to be near family and friends. Sue was devoted to her family and a skilled homemaker. She possessed a beautiful singing voice, was a talented pianist, accomplished cook, baker, and seamstress. She and Millard enjoyed extensive travel, classical music concerts, and art museums. She had a keen mind for details, family connections and communications, and appreciated anything of beauty and quality. Proud of her Swedish heritage, she could find a Swede in any crowd and avidly collected Swedish Dala horses. She is predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Millard, and survived by son Mark (Molly), daughter Melissa Smith-Goldstein (Joel), daughter Evans Bowen (Hamilton), and son Andrew (Emilia), ten grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter, sisters Ellen Gilbert and Sally Tuck, sisters-in-laws Doris Suddarth, and Barbara (Robert) Goyne, and ten nieces and nephews. A private family graveside service will be held next summer in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.
