Charles Robert (CR) Smith, 79, of Maryville, Tennessee, passed away on March 25, 2016. CR was born in Honaker, Virginia on August 25, 1936, the youngest of 14 children. He graduated from Valley Institute, Bristol, Virginia. CR was a proud veteran serving in the Army during the Korean War and a longtime member of the Masons. CR worked as a Quality Control Manager in the aerospace industry for more than 40 years. He had the opportunity to work on prominent programs such as NASA’s Apollo and Space Shuttle and retired from the Boeing Company in 2002. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed playing golf, boating, working in his yard and spending time with family and friends. He was also actively involved in church activities. He will be remembered for his outgoing “never met a stranger” personality, his high spirit, his generous nature, and his undeniable sense of humor. CR is survived by his daughter, Julia Smith Klein (Kenneth); son, Kevin Aston Smith; grandchildren Ashley Klein Bobadilla (René), Lindsay Klein Curtis (Stevan), Ethan Jordan Smith, Preston Daniel Matthews, Jacob Thomas Smith, Laura Nicole Smith, Ryan Aston Smith, Yana Katherine Smith and Jessica Guojing Smith; great grandchildren Brooks Taylor Curtis, Rowan Harper Curtis, Kaiden Whitaker Bobadilla and Kalé Klein Bobadilla; sister, Anna Pearl Slagle, brother Herschel Combs Smith and many nieces, nephews and cousins. CR is preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Maggie Smith (Combs) as well as 8 bothers and 3 sisters. Visitation will be held at 11:00 AM on April 2, 2016 at Smith Mortuary in Maryville, Tennessee, service following at 12:00 Noon. Pastor Michael W. Parker will be officiating. Graveside ceremony, with full military honors, to follow at 3:00 PM at Grandview Cemetery, Maryville, Tennessee.
