Barbara Louise Crowder

Barbara Louise Long Crowder, 71, died Wednesday morning, October 8, 2014 at Blount Memorial Hospital with her two children at her side. She was born in Logansport, Indiana. She attended and graduated from Logansport High School, and attended Butler University. She worked for Trans World Airlines in Chicago, then moved to Maryville, Tennessee in 1965. She was a long time member of the St. Andrews Episcopal Church. She had been an accountant for Robert Fling, CPA, and also for the University of Tennessee, among other places. She was very active in the Blount County Medical Auxiliary for many years. She volunteered as a committee member for the Arts and Crafts show at the Foothills Fall Festival, assisting in 15 years of its success. According to Carolyn Forster, "It was a true pleasure to work with Barbara's talent on the Fall Festival...I loved her wit and sense of history, and I will sincerely miss her." She served on the Maryville Board of Zoning Appeals for nine years, the Maryville Downtown Design Review Board for three years, as well as on the Maryville 2020 Vision Neighborhood Process. "She willingly served the City of Maryville whenever she was called," according to Jane Groff, Community Relations Manager for the City of Maryville, "and she gave generously of her time and talents to improve the quality of life for her family, friends and neighbors." One of her passions was gardening, having attained the title of Master Gardener from the University of Tennessee in 1994. She also received the Certificate of Achievement, completing all requirements of the Alumni Campus Abroad at the Alumni College in Tuscany in Cortona, Italy. She was loved by friends and family for her sharp wit and clever repartee. Survivors include her cherished family: daughter, Kelly of Nashville, TN; son Michael and wife Dana, of Morristown, TN; and grandchildren Ross, 20, and Anna, 17, also of Morristown; brother, Charles Steven Long of Carrolton, GA; brother, Gregory Alan Long and wife Teresa of Savannah, GA; and several nieces and nephews. There will be a gathering of friends on Sunday, October 12, from 4:00 to 5:30 pm, followed by a memory service, at the Smithview Pavilion, 601 Smithview Drive, Maryville, TN.
