Alice M. Hirche went suddenly and unexpectedly to her eternal rest Sunday October 6th, 3 days after her beloved husband of 61+ years passed into God's loving hands. Their love story began when they met in Brooklyn in the late 1940's. Alice graduated from St. Brendan's HS in 1948, and while accepted to college with a scholarship, the need to earn a living interfered with those plans and Alice proudly graduated from Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School. Alice and her loving husband Bob married in February 1952, and Bob went off to the Korean War. Alice lived in base housing in various locations always making friends immediately with her quick wit and generous spirit. In October 1955 son Bob arrived, followed by daughter Hillary in 1957 and finally son Justin (deceased) in 1961. As her children grew, Alice went back to work and her skills as typist and administrative assistant were appreciated by such diverse employers as a famous NY author, a Jesuit Boys High School and in several positions in the Parks & Recreation Department in their former home of Garden City, NY. Her sister-in-law Marjorie, husband Fred, nephews Peter, Jim, nieces Stephanie and Liz loved to visit with Aunt Alice and her family. Alice never failed to make fast and lasting friends in the various locations that her husband's job would take them. She retired with her husband to Maryville TN to be near her son Bob, his wife Susan, and to watch and offer a little guidance to her terrific grandsons Everett and Frederick II (Rick). She also loved to visit her daughter Hillary and partner Therese in their lovely home in the red rocks of Sedona, AZ. Alice traveled extensively in her life and especially enjoyed visits to her cousins in Ireland. But she really appreciated the warmth, love and friendship she found in her adopted Maryville. Alice was a super hostess, wonderful bridge partner, occasional golfer, active member of Our Lady of Fatima Church, loving wife and a generous mother and grandmother. She will be missed by all who had the good fortune to have known her in this life, but mostly by her family, the whole in our hearts will never be filled. Funeral Mass will be at Our Lady of Fatima at 3:00 pm on Thursday, October 10th. A greeting of friends will take place at Smith Funeral Home from 5-7 pm on Wednesday, October 9th. Interment will be at Grandview Cemetery following the funeral mass, and a reception will be held in The Ball Room of Regal Towers of Maryville from 5-7 pm that Thursday evening. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Our Lady of Fatima, 858 Louisville Rd., Alcoa, TN 37701. Smith Funeral & Cremation Service, 865-983-1000, www.SmithMaryville.com
