Dr. Alvin Douglas Sager, more widely known as “Brother Doug,” went on to glory on February 24, 2018, at the age of 78. A native of Midfield, Alabama, Brother Doug preached his first revival at 11 years old and never stopped fulfilling his ministry calling. He attended Howard University, then went on to seminary at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He humbly and faithfully pastored at Trinity Baptist in Ensley, Alabama, Grays Creek Baptist Church in Denham Springs, Louisiana, Pompano Beach Baptist Church in Florida, First Baptist Church Alcoa in Tennessee, Roebuck Park Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, and First Baptist Concord in Knoxville, Tennessee. Upon “retirement,” he preached his last four years at Vonore Baptist Church in Tennessee. He held various positions over the years in the Southern Baptist Convention, Tennessee Baptist Convention, and Alabama Pastor’s Association. Not only did Brother Doug impact the lives of thousands around the world through his passion-filled sermons, teachings, and Vacation Bible Schools, but he will most notably be remembered as a true servant of Christ, acting as the hands and feet of Jesus in all of the big and small ways he loved others. And while he was indeed a fisher of men, his greatest catch here on earth was always his strong and devoted wife of 58 years, Faye Sager. He leaves behind a beautiful legacy of faith through Faye and their children, Traci and Roger Robinson, Tim and Becky Sager, and Cathy Sager, and through their grandchildren, Rachel, Daniel, and Nathaniel Robinson, Alex Sager Fly and Kevin Fly, and Isabelle Sager. They, along with his brothers and sisters, Bill and Cindy Sager, Janice Sager Patterson and her late-husband Larry Patterson, Susan Sager DeRamus and Tommy DeRamus, along with their nieces and nephews, are finding perfect peace in knowing that their husband, daddy, Papa, and brother has been joyfully welcomed into his eternal home. This earthly loss is truly heaven’s gain. A celebration of Brother Doug’s life will be held on Thursday, March 1, 2018 at 6:30 P.M. at First Baptist Concord, 11704 Kingston Pike in Knoxville, TN. Friends may pay their respects from 8am – 5pm, February 26 - 27, 2018 at Smith Funeral & Cremation Service, Maryville. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Vonore Baptist Church, PO Box 308, Vonore, TN 37885, a place among many where his life and impact continues.
